After bringing her two young boys into the world, Katie Owen was left a major pain in her life: swollen and widened feet. As a luxury fashion lover, Katie felt disappointed to find that there were no high-end brands that tailored to wide feet, an issue she had faced even before pregnancy.
Noticing this gap in the shoe market, Katie discovered that out of nine hundred women over half had wide feet – a problem that the shoe entrepreneur has taken it upon herself to solve.
It is often thought that the older people get the less fashionable and, for lack of a better word, the more ‘icky’ their shoes become. But Katie has spoken up on this issue and said that it this often isn’t a choice, but a result of the nicer brands not making wider shoes. It’s somewhat of a misstep for them, considering it’s a necessity for a lot of women, especially those with damaged feet or whose bodies have changed through pregnancy.
Impressively keeping her career as a Wealth manager in Mayfair very much alive, Katie founded Sargasso & Grey on a mission to satisfy the needs of the wider-footed woman. Despite initially thinking that her target audience would be young 20 something year olds, Katie’s main cliental are in their late 30s. For most of these clients, years of dancing until 4am in awfully high heels has taken its toll.
Indeed the company’s tag line reads ‘shoes that don’t squeeze’. We only get one pair of feet in this lifetime, so why put them through unnecessary pain? Fortunately, this doesn’t mean that we only get one pair of shoes. The innovative company contain a wide selection of stylish shoes which inspired by an LK Bennett kind of allure.
The name of the brand is inspired by Jean Rhys’ 1966 novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, a prequel to Jane Eyre. The classicality of the novel certainly appears in the shoe designs too. In supporting British manufacturing, all of Sargasso & Grey’s shoes are handmade using the finest materials in their London based factory.
Sargasso & Grey’s ready to wear collection holds both pastel-coloured and boldly printed shoes, however you certainly can’t go wrong with classic black. Perfect for work or occasion wear, the collection holds a beautiful kitten heel in soft navy suede kid with opening side and pretty crimping detail.
Looking for the perfect pair of shoes for a special occasion? Then take a browse through this brand’s most successful collection, titled Made in England. The collection holds a range of classic court shoes, open side stilettos and peep toes, all made in beautiful leathers, patents and suedes. With a classic cut and wide pallet of colours such as soft grey, claret and navy, it is understandable as to why the range has become so popular.
One of the more flirtatious shoes in this collection is the amber peep toe T-bar stiletto. The sexy peep toe makes for an eye-catching pick, with the strap providing extra support to the foot. The EE width means more wiggle room space for the perfect playful shoe.
Even better - if you want to mix and match some colours and styles, the company provides a customised service that just might be able to make your shoe vision come to life.
Squeezing your feet into uncomfortable shoes for a night on the town is one thing, but forcing this act upon yourself on your wedding day is a new level of madness. Founder Katie Owen says that just as you can guarantee a cake at a wedding, you can bet the bride’s shoes will be thrown to the side of the dance floor not long after she utters ‘I do’.
Advocating the belief that the only time a bride should be seen with bare feet is at the beach, Katie’s company has formed a comfortable and stylish line of bridal wear for both bride and her mother.
As one of the company’s favourites, the Isla wife fit bridal shoe is perfect for the luxurious bride. The ivory court shoe is dressed with intricate beach and crystal heel detail, ideal for brides who elect for a shorter dress. Standing out from the typical bridal colours of ivories, creams and whites, the baby pink suede court shoe would be the flawless pick for a summer wedding.
Wanting to ensure that women care for their feet without having to compromise style, Sargasso & Grey are successfully changing the shoe market for the better. Whilst their classic style remains consistent, the brand makes sure to update styles each season, so keep your eyes peeled!
